Sankara Nethralaya Chennai established in 1976 while speaking to a group of doctors, Mr. Jayendra Saraswathi, spoke of the necessity to make a hospital with a spirit.
His words marked the start of an extended journey to try to to God’s own work.
On the command of His Holiness, Dr. Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath, along side of a group of philanthropists established a charitable not-for-profit eye hospital.
One which would bring world-class eye care to the people of India. One that would adopt a standard to look after all, rich or poor. One who would share the fruits of its knowledge and spread the concept of care to distant parts of India..
In a function held at the premises of the Vijaya Hospital with Mrs (Dr) T Agarwal inaugurating the project and Semmangudi Srinivasa Aiyer offering the prayer,
It was named Sankara Nethralaya, which suggests “The Temple of the Eye”. The long journey for vision with a mission begun.
Sankara Nethralaya Chennai today has grown into an excellent specialty institution for ophthalmic care and receives patients from everywhere the country and abroad. it’s gained international excellence and is acclaimed for its quality care and compassion. The Sankara Nethralaya group today has over 1,500 individuals with a single and admired mission– to generate the Nethralaya philosophy and the place of our work is an Alaya and Work are going to be our worship, which should be performed with sincerity, dedication and utmost love and with a missionary spirit.
Sankara Nethralaya Chennai as described by Mr.Nani Palkivala, an outstanding jurist and a former Indian Ambassador to the USA, because of the “Best Managed Charitable Organization in India”. On a daily basis, over 1200 patients come in through our doors and 200 surgeries are performed in a day .
